Some checks are totally random and just can’t be avoided, the rest of the time you are being checked for a reason. Here is our top 5 ways to help avoid an investigation and to keep HMRC happy even if they do check you;

1 - Keep good records

Crap records = crap accounts = “oh crap I’m getting investigated”. As soon as that brown envelope comes through the door from HMRC and you don’t have good records, you could be in trouble. If there was a speaking action figure of an accountant it would say, “keep your receipts”.

We can help explain what records you need to keep and we even provide templates you can use too:

2 - Get an accountant

Well I guess we would say that wouldn’t we but a good accountant (like us) can keep you on the right track with everything so you don’t appear on HMRC’s potential naughty list in the first place. Plus they can help LEGITIMATELY lower your tax bill.

3 - Have a business bank account.

It doesn’t matter if you’re large or small, a business bank account can really REALLY help. It makes it much easier to show what is business and what is personal costs and if you do get checked it means you give them your business statements, not all your personal ones, would you really want HMRC knowing what you spend your money on?

They don’t usually cost much and can usually be set up dead quickly and easily through your current bank. Just do it, save yourself hassle in the future. Get it done.

4 - Be on time

If your accounts or tax returns are consistently late then it’s going to cost you a lot in penalties but HMRC are also going to think if you get the wrong date then what else are you doing wrong? And then ping, you’re on their radar. The more times you are late then the more chance you get looked at. Same is true of paying tax on time too.

Of course a good tattoo accountant will help you keep to those deadlines and avoid penalties and potential investigations too.

5 - Don’t be stupid

HMRC aren’t stupid, especially the tax investigators. They love what they do and they are damn good at it. They have the power to look at a lot of your records, to come to your shop, to charge you a hell of a lot of money, get bailiffs to collect debts and make your life hell.  Make sure you know what you’re doing or that you have someone in your corner that does.
